RSMF celebrates Make Music Day 2022
On Tuesday 21st June 2022 children from four of our partner schools, St George’s RC Primary School (Scarborough), Easterside Academy (Middlesbrough), Slingsby Community Primary School, and Gillamoor CofE Primary school, came together in the Chapter House at York Minster to perform three popular songs.
The pieces included ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, ‘Count on Me’ and ‘Mr Blue Sky’ and were chosen as part of the Hal Leonard Make Music Day songbook to be sung by people around the world as part of the Make Music Day celebrations. Over the past few weeks, the children have been learning these pieces during music classes and choir practices in each individual school.
Amanda Stone, Head of School at St George’s RC Primary School (Scarborough), commented:
“We had a fantastic time celebrating Make Music Day at York Minster. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to come together with pupils from other schools to share and celebrate their love of music. Being able to do this in such a beautiful setting made it even more special and memorable. It was an absolute pleasure to see the children bring the joy of music to others with their fantastic singing.”
Make Music Day is an international celebration of music which sees musicians, venues, arts organisations and communities from all over the UK put on free live music events. It takes place each year on 21st June.
Cathy Grant commented: “What better day than Make Music Day to celebrate the work that all these young people and schools have put into their music lessons this year and to celebrate the Foundation in increasing musical opportunities in the region. The combination of the chance to perform together at such an amazing venue, and the fact that thousands of other children were taking part from across the world on the same day, was inspiring. Never has it been more important to emphasise how music can unite people while also improving children’s health, wellbeing and wider educational attainment. We hope and trust that Richard Shephard would have enjoyed seeing so many children singing in one of his favourite places.”
The Richard Shephard Music Foundation offers musical opportunities and experiences to local children. Working with education delivery partner Sing Education, the Foundation provides weekly subsidised music lessons as well as holiday clubs and performance opportunities.
